Last Fit-History Hike of the Fall Gives You Exercise & Education

Fit-History Hike

Our culture places a lot of emphasis on multi-tasking. It’s said, though, that very few people can successfully perform two tasks at once. But in Fredericksburg, you have the chance to multi-task in a way that benefits mind, body, and soul. This hike will work your body while building your knowledge at the same time.

Join the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Military Park for its final iteration of the Fit-History Hike Series the Saturday.

Virginia Central Trail & Idlewild Hike

If you haven’t heard of the Fit-History Hike Series, now is your last chance to experience it. The series consists of ranger-led hikes that are designed to cover a lot of ground, as well as a lot of history. Saturday’s hike will cover Virginia Central Trail and Idlewild, 2.3 and 4.7 miles, respectively. You can choose the 2.3-mile round trip if you’re not up for a full day’s excursion, or opt for the longer option to hike to the Idlewild house site. If you choose the longer hike, don’t be surprised when you emerge from the woods. The trek briefly passes through a modern subdivision on the way to the Idlewood house.

During the hike, you’ll explore one of the region’s newest trails while learning from historians John Hennessy and Becca Jameson. By learning along the hike, you’re exercising, relaxing, and expanding your knowledge all at once. Now that’s a kind of multi-tasking that could work.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. Hikers will meet at Alum Spring Park:  1 Greenbrier Dr., Fredericksburg, VA 22401. This event is provided free of charge.

Preparing for the Fit-History Hike

You must keep in mind that you’ll be in the woods for a while with this hike. It’s a good idea to bring a small backpack filled with water, snacks, and bug spray. If you have any allergies, be sure to bring along proper medication, too. You never know what you’ll encounter in the woods.

For clothing, consider wearing long pants to protect your legs from scratches, insects, and poison ivy. Even though it’s cooler this time of year, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can warm up during a hike. Many hikers will wear short sleeves for this reason. If you’re worried about the cold, you can always pack a light-weight jacket in your backpack.

You’ll want to wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes for this hike. Sandals are popular among some hikers, but they don’t provide protection from dirt and water.
