5 Ways To Prepare For A Winter Power Outage

Power Line

Winter is in full swing right here in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and that means inclement weather can be a threat. And when a storm comes through, not only can roads become treacherous, but you may need to take precautions to protect your home as well. Here are 5 ways to prepare for a winter power outage in the unfortunate event that one occurs.

Stock Up On Batteries

Make sure you have plenty of batteries available. First, check what specific devices may need which types of batteries, then be sure to grab the sizes you need for flashlights, smoke detectors, radios, clocks, and anything else in your home that runs on a battery.

Check Your Flashlights

You may not have used your flashlights in quite some time. Locate them all to be sure that they are in working order and that they are already equipped with fresh batteries.

Plan Your Meals

Have you considered how you will cook if you don’t have electricity? If you have gas appliances, it shouldn’t be a problem. Simply use a match or lighter to light your stovetop. But if you have electric appliances, you’ll need to consider other means. A propane tank or open fire can be used as long as you cook outdoors. You’ll just need to make sure you have all the propane or wood you need, depending on how you cook. Alternatively, simply eating nonperishable food such as canned food, crackers, and other items can be a good choice.

Stay Warm

Chances are you’re going to need a way to heat your home. Rule number one: do not use a propane heater inside unless it’s specifically designed for indoor use. This can fill your home with deadly carbon monoxide. We need to repeat this one: do not use propane heaters in your home. If you have a fireplace, be sure you have plenty of firewood.

Generator

Ever think about buying a backup generator? You can switch it on manually or have it automatically come on when you lose power. You’ll probably use it outside. Otherwise, read the directions carefully to be sure it’s safe inside.
